Breed: Masham The stunning texture of this Masham fleece is the result of a legendary crossbreeding tradition dating back to 10th-century Viking invaders, who first paired rugged mountain dams with majestic longwool rams in the North Yorkshire Dales. By the Middle Ages, medieval monks at Fountains Abbey and Jervaulx Abbey had scaled this exact Swaledale and Teeswater cross into a lucrative wool empire! They traded so many of these premium fleeces that the town of Masham became vastly wealthy, building one of the largest market squares in England to handle the sheer volume of wool. By purchasing this felted vegetarian pelt, you are owning a living piece of British agricultural history that has been perfected across a thousand years. Look closely at the middle of the pelt. Here, the Teeswater genetics shine through in tight, bouncy, miniature ringlets that give the rug a wonderfully detailed, bubbly texture. As you move toward the outer edges, the fleece opens up into longer, beautifully structured crimps. This gives the pelt its distinctive, wild "halo". |
